Gray

At the start Gray looks like a weak little pup whose gray coat could pass for that of a stray dog. Once Rakan's Blade pours its strength into him, he grows to roughly the build of a common wolf; a black cross-shaped mark sits on his gray-furred head, fangs sharpen in his jaws, and amber eyes ringed around black pupils complete the change.

During his pup years Gray is open-hearted and playful, glad of Brocky's friendship and faithful to those close to him, even allying with an outsider to bring Brocky down. Burning ambition pushes him toward the power once held by the first Beast Monarch, his ancestor. Arrogance shows through as well, since he ridicules Esil for not commanding the strong skills he has, and so does idleness, as the very idea of endless training leaves him stunned.

When the Beast Monarch dies, Brocky hides Gray away, yet the Itarim's followers break into their shelter and bend the brainwashed Hyena Guild, Brocky included, to their will, leaving Gray harshly abused by the one who once cared for him. Suho's arrival at the compound brings Gray to his predecessor's blade; feeding on its essence, he grows powerful, helps crush the maddened guild, and uses Beast Possession on Suho to halt the rampage before grieving Brocky and joining Suho in the shadow realm. Early on his enhanced strength from Rakan's Blade lets him fell goblins with a single bite and even bloody Brocky in one, while his speed lands a surprise blow on Brocky; his weak endurance, though, wears him out after a hunt of more than a hundred goblins with Suho's aid.

By the White Abyss Arc, training under Ammut in the pyramid has turned the once-spoiled pup into a genuine predator. Crossing the Sea of the Afterlife with Ammut and Arsha, he meets Esil again at the World Tree and battles Nidhogg beside Sirka, until Ammut throws him into the beast's mouth, which opens the ceremony for Monarch succession. Gulped down entirely, Gray lands in the Primordial Forest, fights ancient monsters, and meets a Behemoth that strains him to his breaking point. Suho steps in to stop the finishing blow, mends him with a white shadow, and returns the experience he had surrendered; Gray then unleashes Fatal Wound, follows it with Contempt for the Weak to reverse the fight, kills the Behemoth, and clears out the remaining beasts. Having drawn in the Primordial Light and Darkness on top of Suho's restoration, Rakan proclaims him Monarch of the Hunt and the fresh King of Beasts before merging with him, and a reborn Monarch emerges from Nidhogg's body to rejoin his companions.
