Light wins Misa's trust and intends to turn her eyes against L, accepting her condition that he date her while warning he will kill her if she disobeys. Rem answers with a threat of her own, promising to write Light's name should any harm reach Misa, even though rescuing her would cost Rem her life. Light is thus trapped into safeguarding Misa and meeting her regularly, a burden made stranger by the discovery that she is a celebrated model.

A broadcast tape from the second Kira pledges allegiance to Kira, leading L to suspect the two have met and joined forces. Suspicion tightens around Light, since the message never asked L to show his face and Light already knows it. Light pushes back against the inference, but the comparison of him to Kira distresses his father. L goes so far as to call Light his first true friend, yet he quietly assigns Mogi to track his suspect's movements. When Misa visits again, she angers Light and draws Mogi's notice.

In private, Light challenges Rem over her devotion to Misa, and because killing L would keep Misa both happy and safe without harming Rem herself, the death god agrees to do it. The episode adds two rules: the act of suicide stands as a legitimate cause of death, since any person is deemed capable of choosing it, and a death engineered to take more lives than intended collapses into a simple heart attack so others are spared. It premiered in Japan on January 16, 2007, and in English on January 25, 2008.
