Selfless State

Also called the Realm of the Highest and the Domain of Supremacy, the Selfless State is a hidden plane of being hinted to be the absolute peak of close combat. The person who enters it erases their fighting spirit completely, along with the urge to battle, bloodlust, rage, hatred, and any trace of ill will. Their manner turns deeply calm and centered, so quiet that observers liken them to a plant rooted in place.

Knowledge of the state is rare, held by only a handful with deep insight, and rarer still is the ability to actually enter it. Across his many centuries, Akaza had never met a human stripped of fighting spirit, since even infants give off a faint flicker of it. As a devoted martial artist he sensed the state existed, yet he could never reach it himself. It first appears in Chapter 151, with its broader nature explored around Chapter 153.

The Selfless State does not raise a user's combat ability on its own, yet it is treated as the highest tier of physical fighting a person can attain. Its true value lies against opponents who track malice, aura, or fighting spirit through forms of extrasensory perception. Because such a foe cannot read the battle spirit of someone in the state, their senses falter and they grow confused, as if facing an unseen presence that simply does not register. Combined with the Transparent World, it lets a fighter predict an enemy's vital points and motion through slowed perception and foresight while keeping their own attacks hidden, opening the way to a finishing strike.

To unlock it, the lessons Tanjuro Kamado passed to his son describe engaging all five senses and growing aware of every part of the body down to the smallest vessel. By tightly governing breath, movement, and sensation, a person produces maximum force with minimal waste, until the mind itself slips beyond view and every sense closes off into total detachment from the self. Holding the state even briefly is brutal at first, since the body sits at the edge of its strength, as Tanjiro discovered the first time he entered it. With steady training the duration grows, and Tanjuro managed to live within it across his whole life.

Yoriichi Tsugikuni unsettled Muzan Kibutsuji at their first meeting because the demon could detect no ambition, hatred, or killing intent in him, only for Yoriichi to wound him so severely the injuries burned for centuries. Tanjuro Kamado remained in the state for nearly his entire existence, gentle and plant-like to the end, and once slew a bear before his son without a flicker of fear or intent to kill. Tanjiro Kamado reached it during the final clash with Akaza, vanishing from the demon's senses long enough to behead him, though his inexperience left him flooded with pain afterward and unable to hold on.
