History
During the Task Force's assault on the Mafia hideout to recover the Death Note, Mello and Soichiro Yagami reach a standoff, the former threatening to level the base with explosives and the latter poised to write Mello's name in the notebook. Lying still nearby as though dead, Jose seizes the moment when Mello distracts Soichiro, snatches a machine gun, and opens fire, gravely wounding the deputy director. He then tries to pry the Death Note from Soichiro's grip but cannot loosen it, and other officers storm in and gun him down just before Mello sets off the explosives.
