Appearance

When the twin brothers first recovered it, the devil had been reduced almost to nothing, shrunk down until little more than the flame crowning its head could still be seen. Restored to its proper shape, it stands tall with its skull replaced by open fire. A ring of kindling circles its throat the way logs are stacked for a bonfire, and a ragged cape of scorched branches and blackened timber spreads across its shoulders like a crown of cinders. The limbs taper into forms closer to charred driftwood, the fingers like brittle twigs, and a singed robe hangs over the frame. Slender shoots of flame trail from its spine. What can be glimpsed of its face reads as oddly human below the fire that hides the upper half, marked by a pair of eyes clustered on the right, nothing on the left, and a mouth shaped like an upward arrow or a cross.

Personality

Cool and unbothered on the surface, it carries itself with the patience of a schemer rather than a brawler. It takes a clinical interest in raw power, sizing Denji up only after watching him cut down the imposter wearing Chainsaw Man's shape. The harm it does to its own followers troubles it not at all, since the steady slide into madness is the entire point of what it offers. That detachment masks a grudge-bearing, vindictive streak. Wearing the Justice Devil persona, it leans on guilt and sympathy, spinning sorrowful accounts of the two brothers it once swayed in order to pull others toward its side. It will accuse Denji of cold indifference while openly admitting that selfishness defines every devil, a contradiction it makes no effort to resolve. Open fighting holds little appeal for it; when a tower comes down around it, it simply slips away, the choice of a creature that wins through persuasion and patience instead of claws.

History

Its origin traces to a wounded encounter with two brothers who took it in and tended its injuries. As they nursed it, they spoke of Chainsaw Man's good deeds and pressed it to stand for what is right; moved by their conviction, it sealed pacts with them and let them take on shapes built from their own ideals of justice. This became its method. Hiding behind the Justice Devil name, it spread contracts through Fourth East High School, each one granting a form drawn from the contractor's private desire, and it grew stronger with every soul it claimed. One student, the class president, used her pact to attack Asa Mitaka out of jealousy before the War Devil cut her down. Another, Yuko, gained the power to pry into thoughts, and after her defeat she warned that the Justice Devil still lurked among the students.

The deception widened during the rise of the Chainsaw Man Church, when a man posing as Chainsaw Man announced his own bond with the Justice Devil. The truth surfaced soon after: the Justice Devil was the Fire Devil all along, a servant of the Death Devil, and roughly 350,000 church members had been married into its contract, surrendering their humanity in the process. Once the Death Devil drew near, it stood among the high-ranking devils gathered to receive her. After Denji tore down the false Chainsaw Man, the Fire Devil stepped out of the wreckage, having ridden inside the imposter the entire time. It praised his strength, told him a fresh choice between two paths was coming, urged him not to repeat his old mistake, and disappeared, leaving Denji to brood over which side he would take.
